    Good Luck!

  • Your older brother's best friend, Ricky, is the son of the owner of the local Bowling Alley. While it's not officially open to the public, Ricky has been given permission to let small groups in to play a few games this weekend. Apparently the equipment needs to be used every once in a while, just like a car--or something, so that nothing breaks down or runs out of battery power.

Luckily for you, you're on your brother's good side this weekend and he invites you to go with him and his friends.

Halfway through the game, the older kids decide that they're hungry. Of course, the food court staff isn't working today, so your brother offers to pick up the pizza if someone else orders. A few of the others offer to help your brother carry the pizza boxes and 2-liters of pop and suddenly you find yourself alone in the closed bowling alley with nobody else for company except Ricky's quiet little sister, Alexa.

  • The two of you stand around in awkward silence for a few minutes before Alexa quietly states, "I know how to reset a game if you're interested. We could play, just the two of us, until the older kids get back."

Knowing that it will take at least 15 minutes or longer for the food to be ready and the older kids to come back, you shrug, figuring, what could be the harm in playing a round or two?

Alexa smiles and says cheerfully, "I'll be right back!"

"Wait!" You call after her, but she's already ducked behind the door at the far end of the alley.

  • You stand around and wait for Alexa to come back, but after five minutes you decide to try something else.

  • Image field 36
  • Oh! So that's the line the locked door was talking about. But what's it called?

  • Image field 39
  • Taped to the top of the ball return you see a small sticky note. It reads: "Should you find yourself locked out, look for the ball that is lighter than it states. It's weight has a number--two at that! And it's color has the least letters to it's name."

You roll over all the balls to check for numbers. The only ones with visible weights are those shown above.

  • Huh. This just seems like a regular bowling ball. You must have picked the wrong one.

  • You pick up the ball, wondering what on earth you're supposed to do with it--throw it at something locked? When the ball, much lighter than you expected, jingles as you lift it.

You shake the ball even harder and suddenly a small SILVER KEY falls out of one of the overly large finger holes.

  • Just out of curiousity, you look behind the counter where people rent their bowling shoes. Maybe the desk attendant left a sticky note with the access codes written on it.

You don't see any sticky notes as you check around. Instead, you see a locked silver box with the number 12 tucked under the counter.

  • Image field 49
  • Hmm... That didn't seem to work. Try a different key?

  • Hurray! The SILVER KEY unlocked the silver box.

  • You very carefully make your way to the end of the Bowling Lane and begin to examine the space beyond the pins. You think you've seen someone reset something in the void beyond the pins once...

You lean a little closer and knock over all of the pins. As you begin to set them back up you notice that they all have numbers painted on them.

  • Image field 54
  • When you pick up pins 1, 2 and 3, you notice that there are small pieces of paper wrapped around each one. When you unroll them this is what you read:

From Pin 1: Number of strikes required to score a perfect 300.

From Pin 2: I am an odd number. Take away a letter and I become even. What number am I?

From Pin 3: If two's company, & three's a crowd, what are four and five?

  • You dash down the alley like you saw Alexa do, and nearly fall! Boy, are bowling alley lanes slippery!

When you reach the door, you notice two different locks located on the door. Trying the handle, you realize that the door isn't going to open until you've entered the right selection for both locks.

  • Hmm. This doesn't appear to be working. Try something else?

  • You unlock the door and it swings open to reveal Alexa holding the outside door open for your brother and his friends as they saunter into the office carrying pizza, pop, and cups.

Alexa gives you an apologetic smile. "I hit the wrong button," she says quietly, passing you a slice of pizza. "And your brother came back quicker than I thought."

Your brother gives you a funny look, asking, "How'd you get into the office, anyway?"

Ricky gives you a knowing look, "You found Grandpa's old clues, didn't you?"

    "Grandpa's old clues?" Alexa asks.

Ricky nods, "Grandpa would only give employees entrance codes ONE time. Apparently he had a lot of school kids working for him that couldn't remember the combinations to get into the office. And before that they just kept losing keys. So Grandpa left clues around the bowling alley and made the employees guess their way in. He said it taught them a valuable lesson or something."
