    Good Luck!

  • Today is Saturday, which means that you and your older brother are on laundry duty. You help load up all of the dirty laundry baskets and pile them into the back of the sedan. Your brother grabs the quarter jar, and mom grabs the keys.

This week, mom says that there should be enough quarters in the jar for all of the laundry and two sodas, one for you and your brother. While the two of you work on the laundry, mom is going to pick up the groceries at the store right next door. If you need anything, you're supposed to call her.

She drops two additional quarters in the quarter jar for the pay phone and quickly jots her cell phone number on a piece of paper and hands it to you before waving goodbye.

  • Your brother counts out 8 quarters, just enough for two sodas.

He asks what you'd like to drink and you suggest that you get the laundry started first.

  • Image field 12
  • Your brother looks at you funny. "I'm still going to go get mine, but you can get yours whenever."

He hands you 4 quarters and steps outside to use the vending machine.

You put the coins in your pocket with your mom's cell phone number.

  • You start sorting the laundry and loading it up into four different washing machines. While you're working, you keep hearing a weird knocking noise, but you ignore it. Somebody probably put their tennis shoes in the dryer again.

It isn't until you go back to the table to count out $1.50 per machine, that you notice that your brother hasn't come back in yet.

  • Image field 30
  • Hint: It takes 4 quarters to make 1 dollar. And you need $1.50 for each of the 4 washing machines you are using.

  • Try again!

  • That's right! You count out 24 quarters and put 6 quarters in each machine.

More knocking insues and you turn to look at the door. Your brother is standing outside, pounding on the door.

  • Image field 26
  • You walk over to the door, and give your brother a look that clearly says, "why are you knocking on the door?"

Your brother glares back at you, clearly he has been the one knocking on the door since you started loading the washing machines--oops! He tugs on the door handle, but nothing happens. He gestures for you to open the door.

You push on the door--but nothing happens. You are stuck inside the Laundromat and your brother is stuck outside.

You take a quick glance around, but you are the only person in the building.

  • What do you do?
  • Image field 35
  • The door appears to have a keyed lock on both sides of the door.

  • Your brother looks at the lock from his side of the door. "There's a weird thing scribbled on my side of the lock," he tells you.

You ask him to describe it, and instead he breathes on the glass and draws the following image:

  • Image field 64
  • Hint: There are TWO parts to the name of the tool that will unlock this door.

  • Try again!

  • Image field 41
  • You walk over to the pay phone and notice a note taped to it:

"Dear customer, the payphone only works if you enter exactly 35 cents per call.

    Sorry for the inconvenience,

    -Management"

What? The payphone has always cost 50 cents! That's why mom left you two extra quarters! How are you supposed to enter 35 cents exactly when you only have quarters?

  • Mom's number goes straight to voicemail... now what?

You leave her a message about being locked in the laundromat and head back to talk to your brother.

  • Where do you search first?
  • Under the washers you find a nickel and two pennies.

  • In the driers and lint traps you find 3 wrinkled dollar bills, 1 twenty dollar bill, 7 quarters, and 1 penny.

  • Image field 53
  • You don't find any money in the detergent vending machine-- but you do realize that your brother forgot to pack the detergent AND dryer sheets. If you want to finish the laundry, you'll have to buy some of both from this machine.

  • Hint: You loaded washing machines with dirty clothes. The detergent pods cost per pod. You will need to purchase      drier sheet box(es). The drier sheets require one sheet per load and cost      per box (of 5). (Assume you will load as many driers as you do washing machines). Blank 1 x Blank 2 =    . And Blank 3 x Blank 4 =   . The amount of money you need to put in the machine to finish the laundry is equal to the sum of Blank 5 and Blank 6.

  • That's right! You insert $5.00 total in the machine and get 4 laundry pods and one box of 5 drier sheets. Now you can finish the laundry!

  • Image field 61
  • Hint: Your brother forgot to pack the laundry detergent AND the drier sheets. Maybe you should look around the laundromat for a detergent dispenser.

  • Image field 59
  • Yes! The laundry is done! If nothing else, once the door gets unlocked, you'll be able to go straight home.

As you pull the last pair of pants from the drier, you hear a weird clinking sound. You reach your arm into the drier and find an unfamiliar set of keys, one silver square, one circular silver one, and one red pentagon key.

  • Image field 62
  • You reach into your pocket and pull out 4 quarters, 1 nickel, and the piece of paper mom gave you with her cell phone number on it. It reads:

    260-111-1111

  • Image field 69
  • It worked! The Red Pentagon Key opened the door--and just in time. Mom is rushing down the sidewalk, talking on her phone.

She sees you with the key ring in your hand. "Did you say you lost a key ring with three keys on it--one of them is red? Yes, I believe my children have found your keys."

She gives you a questioning look and you nod, mouthing, "In a drier!"

"Yes, in one of the driers," she tells the person on the phone. "Yes, we can wait until you get here to hand them back. Our laundry probably isn't done yet. See you soon."

When your mom hangs up the phone you grin and tell her, "Actually! The laundry is all done!"

Mom smiles, "Look at you, using your time wisely. I think this calls for ice cream!"

Your brother loads up all of the neatly folded clothes and you get your well deserved soda from the vending machine.

A few short minutes later, the manager of the laudromat pulls into the parking lot and jumps out of the car. "Oh! Thank goodness!" He says as he takes the keys from your mom. "I must have set them on one of my baskets of dirty laundry this morning."

Your mom hands over the keys and you and your family head for ice cream.
