  • You wake up one morning to a knock on your door. You open it to discover one of the monks requesting your presence in the courtyard. As you follow the elderly monk, you wonder what is in store for you.

  • Image field 9
  • When you get to the courtyard, you see before you a line of eight Air Acolytes, monks and nuns from all four Air Temples. The monk who knocked on your door this morning steps away from the line to stand in front of you.

"Greetings, again, young bender." The monk smiles at your warmly. "You must be wondering why we brought you to the Southern Air Temple. We have been observing you closely and we wish to ask you a series of questions. Do you agree?"

You give your consent but when you ask for the reason, the monk just smiles.

"All will be revealed in time," he says with a chuckle. "Shall we proceed?"

  • "As you know, the Avatar is the only person who can bend all four elements. Every Avatar is born into one of the four nations - The Fire Nation, the Air Nomads, the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom. Here we have a stone tablet with all the avatars. However, some have been rubbed away. Can you tell me what nation the five outlined squares should be?

  • Image field 12
  • "Oh no, child." says the monk with a smile. "I am afraid that is incorrect. Why don't you try again? No punctuation is needed.

  • Image field 106
  • The monk's face lights up. "Yes, child, you are absolutely right. I knew you would be able to tell me. Now for your next question."

  • The monk steps back into line and a wild looking monk steps forward. This monk is unfamilar to you but it seems to you he is very wise as his eyes have the look of someone who has seen much. His feet are dirty but he looks strong so you guess that he has travelled far and wide. He looks at you kindly and says:

"Our world is inhabited by many wonderful creatures. Of these pictures, which does not belong?"

  • Image field 21
  • Which option does not belong?*
  • "No, I have definitely seen an otter penguin. They live in the South pole. Go back and try again."

  • "Tiger seals live in the South Pole. Try again."

  • "The Lion Turtle is an ancient creature. You may not have seen it but it definitely exists. Try again."

  • "You have never seen a Dragon Moose? They are everywhere in the Fire nation. Try again."

  • Correct!

"I've never heard of a Octopus Shark," says the wild monk. "I have seen a Shark Squid before. But that is besides the point. Time for another test..."

  • The monk steps back into line and is replaced by a tall nun. By the serious look on her face, you can tell this is not someone to be messed with.

"Every bending style relies upon movements of the body to conjure the elements. Turn around and watch my shadow as I go through the bending movements. See if you can determine what direction I am facing..."

  • Image field 37
  • Determine the direction*
  • "No, I am sorry but that is incorrect. Let's try again."

  • Image field 105
  • The nun bows to you and says:

"Well done, young one. Even by observing only my shadow, you were able to sense my movements. Now for another test..."

  • The nun steps back to make way for an elderly monk. The monk ambles forward, walking with his cane. This monk is older than any of the other ones but his kind face helps you to feel relaxed.

"Young one, please listen to a story I heard when I was your age. Pay attention to the details..."

Here is the tale he tells:

  • Image field 102
  • "Now, young one, let me see if you were listening..."

  • "No, my child," the monk sighs sadly. "Listen closely and try again."

  • Image field 107
  • The old monk's beams at you brightly and his face cracks into a smile.

"Your listening skills are very attentive. I would expect nothing less..."

  • The elderly monk continues to stare contently at you but he seems to be lost in thought. One of the nuns approaches from behind and taps him on his shoulder. He looks up at her and must remember what he was doing because he shuffles back to his place.

The nun who tapped him on the shoulder now turns to you. She is young but her face shows much intelligence. She has a clever smile on her face as she speaks.

"Hello, young bender. Allow me to test the sharpness of your mind. I have arranged these letters into a cipher. If you are able to decipher my secret message, you may continue on with your test."

    THTGAT SEFORH EWONDE

"I will even give you a hint. Place the words in three rows."

  • Image field 104
  • The nun takes a deep breath and you almost think you see her roll her eyes.

"No, you are incorrect. Try again. This time, read right to left."

  • Image field 101
  • "The Dragon of the West. Also known as Iroh, the great Fire Nation general and uncle to Zuko"

The nun gives you a sly smile. It is then that you notice another nun has approached you on your other side.

  • This nun looks so similar to the previous nun that you can only assume they are sisters. The second nun has the same clever look to her face and she pulls out a scroll from her sleeve. As she unrolls it, you see it contains a drawing.

"Now that you know the identity of The Dragon of the West, can you find in this drawing an object that he holds sacred?"

  • Image field 60
  • The nun, like her sister, takes a deep breath and again you believe you see her roll her eyes.

"No, you are incorrect. Try again. Think of Iroh's favorite beverage.

  • "So you found the teacup. Iroh always had a fondness for tea and one cannot drink tea without a teacup."

Both nuns face you and say in unison, "You have passed our tests, now for your next one..."

  • Image field 99
  • The two nuns step back into place and a monk step in front of you. He has a jovial demeanor, with laugh lines creasing his face.

"You are a most ingenious child. Let me put your mind to a test..."

  • Image field 100
  • "Many words sound the same but mean different things. A word for this is homophone. Let me test your thinking: What tree comes in twos?

  • "No, no, no... you must think of different words. This is a fruit tree."

  • Image field 98
  • "A Pear Tree!" the monk laughs out loud. "you are very clever, let's try another one: What do you call a stallion with sore throat?"

  • "No, I am sorry, you will have to think a littler harder."

  • Image field 97
  • "A hoarse horse! That gets me every time," the monk guffaws, holding his sides. "One more, child, let us try one more: What vegetable is dangerous to have on a ship?"

  • "Now, I know you must be creative than that. Try again."

  • "A leek! Get it? It sounds like leak," the monk chortles as he turns around to return to his place in line. "Well done, child, well done."

When the monk returns to his place, the final acolyte approaches you...

  • Image field 96
  • She is a graceful nun with a serene look on her face. She speaks gently but with a strong voice.

"Congratulations, dear one, on all your successes. You have proven you are learned beyond your years. My test is the final one. Look at these pictures I have here, what comes to mind when you see these?"

  • Image field 87
  • "I am looking for a different answer," the nun says quietly.

  • "Pai Sho. The game used to identify the members of the Order of the White Lotus."

The nun steps back and all the acolytes gather around her. You hear them whispering but you cannot make out their words. Suddenly they all stop talking and turn to you. The final nun steps forward again.

"You have proven a great deal to us, child. Or should we call you...
